From 1973 to 1978 various organized recreation groups in Klamath County formed a loose alliance to find an area in which to pursue their diverse types of outdoor activities.

In 1979, largely through the efforts of Bill Scholtes, the manager for Pacific Power & Light and Keith Read who was Parks Director for Klamath County, a 345 acre parcel was offered to Klamath County for a $1 per year lease. The parcel was developed into a ‘sportsman’s park’ by the Klamath Sportsmans Park Association, a group of volunteers who guided the improvements and operation. The park was named to honor the man who was the driving force in its creation.

In 2005 the park was offered for sale to the county. The Association took the lead in securing grants, loans and donations to make the purchase of the park possible in December of 2007.

The park is unique in that it is a ‘noise park’ with broad diversity. It is not a piece of ground that has been salvaged from a gravel pit or a barren landscape. It is a beautifully treed riverside property with great views and its forest–like nature provides wildlife habitat and the trees mitigate the noise of the activities within the park.

We have been careful not to over build the park and to still have room for careful expansion. The park is ahead of its time because as the Klamath Basin becomes more populated, opportunities for outdoor recreation become scarcer. The park provides a convenient environment for those activities. It is of tremendous value to the community’s economic base with attendance of more than 10,000 people a year.

The park is open every day. Membership in the Park Association is not necessary although it is a bargain at $60 per year for a family membership. The day use fee for non-members is $6.00 per day for each person who is 10 years old or older. Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult who is either a Park Member or who has paid the Day Use Fee.

Overnight camping is permitted in designated areas. The camping fee is $7.00 per night. Both RVs and tent campers are welcome.
