The Bill Scholtes Klamath Sportsman’s Park is a unique, one-of-a-kind park, due to its broad diversity. It is not a piece of ground that has been salvaged from a gravel pit or a piece of barren landscape. It is instead a 340 acre beautifully treed riverside property with great views. Its diversity and landscape have attracted people from out of town to its many events. We have bee careful to not over-build and still have room for some careful expansion. A park of this nature is ahead of its time and should be managed to attend future needs. Because of its forest-like nature and planning it still provides wildlife habitat despite its noise related activities. The trees have served as a natural sound barrier.

This park is of tremendous value to county family recreation and to the community’s economic base.  Attendance averages 11,000-12,000 people a year.

Park History:

From 1973 1978 various organized groups in Klamath County were looking for an area to use in pursuit of their various types of recreation– archery, shooting, four wheel drive vehicles, motorcycles and radio controlled aircraft.

In 1979, through the generosity of Pacific Power & Light and the efforts of Bill Scholtes, Manager of PP&L in Klamath Falls at that time, 345 scenic acres was offered to Klamath County for a development of a Sportsman's park.

The Klamath Sports Park Association was formed in 1978 to guide the development and operation of the Bill Scholtes Sports Park. Its Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from the Four Runners, Klamath Bow Hunters, Jefferson State Shooters Association, Flightmasters, Klamath Fast Trekkers, Oregon Hunters Association, Pacific Power & Light and Klamath County.

Currently there is a move by Klamath County and Park users to buy the property from PP&L and make it into a county park.
